Freshwater record-seekers have been skunked, thus far, but that doesn’t mean there’s a lack of dandy rivers and lakes to test your line, your bait and your skills. For instance, remember that beauty pageant back in Okeechobee? Well, more than two million of those feisty speckled perch are hauled into boats every year, and there’s no sign they’re going to quit depositing little fry for the coming seasons.
The huge lake also is a good spot to go after those lunker largemouth bass as well as Florida gar, black crappie, panfish, sunshine bass, oscar and catfish – though the latter are not nearly as plentiful as they used to be. The area’s prime launching site is the Okee-Tantie Recreation Area. The site has 309 campsites, two boat ramps, a bait-andtackle shopand 28 boat slips.
It’s on Hwy 78, about six miles southwest of the town of Okeechobee. There are several lake access spots on Hwy 78 and US 441.
